These are sort of equal opportunity desserts. Sure, they look almost exactly like those deadly stakes Buffy wields so victoriously every week. Why not watch an episode and, every time she stakes a vamp, chomp on a pretzel? On the other hand, it was pointed out to me that these lovely things do, in fact, resemble spikes. That would make them chocolate covered spikes. While Spike has never been covered in chocolate in an actual episode (at least not on screen), the connection was too much for my Spike-lovin' heart to ignore. So, here they are, the ultimate melding of Buffy and Spike.
10 pretzel rods
12 ounces of semisweet or dark chocolate broken in bits (I'll spare you the giant lecture on choice of chocolate here that I give with Willow's cookies. Pick good chocolate. Lindt is fabulous.)
1/2 teaspoon of butter
Any assorted things you want to roll your pretzel in (crushed peppermint candies, chopped nuts, crushed Oreos, itsy-bitsy M&M's, sprinkles, cookie toppings, whatever)
1. Heat the chocolate and the butter together in the top of a double boiler. Keep stirring it or it will clump up on you.
2. Once the chocolate is melted, take it off the heat. Pick up a pretzel rod by the end using a pair of tongs. Use a spoon to pour the melted chocolate all over the pretzel. If the chocolate starts to harden up, heat it again very briefly.
3. If you're just going to coat your pretzels in chocolate, put the pretzel onto a sheet of wax paper. If you want to add any of the optional ingredients, roll the chocolate pretzel lightly across a cookie pan full of the topppings, and then put it on the wax paper.
4. It's usually best to refrigerate these for a while until the chocolate is set, especially in warm weather. When they're set, peel off the wax paper. Store them in a dry place and, if it's hot out, you may want to just stick them right back in the fridge.
Makes approximately 10 (you may have some chocolate left over for more).
